In this meet-up, we'll focus on essential astrophotography skills, including planning, focusing, exposure settings, camera setup, foreground composition, and more. While stars will be visible, the Milky Way won't rise until later in the night.
The location is a short and easy 5-10 minute walk to the headland, outside the quarry.
We'll also capture the lights of Kiama as a seascape.
This session is perfect for beginners in astrophotography. You should be familiar with adjusting your camera's manual exposure settings.

Milky Way Landscapes: Astrophotography at Bombo
Saturday 26 April
Kiama - 7:30pm - 2 Hours
Sue Curtis
Bombo Quarry is a famous geological landmark that offers a great spot for night photography, away from the distractions of urban lights. The towering rocks will provide interesting foreground elements for our night sky shots, or we can point our cameras eastward to capture the Milky Way as it rises above the horizon.
For this meet-up, participants are expected to already have a solid understanding of manual mode and, ideally, prior experience with night sky photography.
Please note that the session is dependent on favourable weather and ocean conditions.
You'll need to bring a proper torch (not just your phone), as we'll be navigating down into the quarry in the dark, using steep steps and uneven, rocky terrain.
A separate meet-up, "Skills for Astrophotography," will occur just before this event. If you're new to night sky photography, it's highly recommended that you attend the skills session first.
